The European Series in Applied and Industrial Mathematics (ESAIM) was founded in 1995 by the Société de Mathématiques Appliquées et Industrielles (SMAI), with the support of the Ministère de l’Éducation, de l’Enseignement Supérieur et de la Recherche.
Initially the series comprised three electronic journals:
- ESAIM: COCV (Control, Optimisation and Calculus of Variations),
- ESAIM: P&S (Probability and Statistics),
- ESAIM: Proceedings and Surveys.
In 1999, the journal RAIRO-Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis (M2AN), which is also published under the auspices of the SMAI, was integrated into the ESAIM series (ESAIM: M2AN).
In 2006, the journal RAIRO-RO was integrated into the ESAIM series and published under the auspices of the SMAI and the ROADEF.
